Research abstract

The future battlespace will increasingly rely on runway-independent vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) air vehicles to provide rapid air transport, distributed and contested logistics, recovery / medical evacuation, and fuel resupply.Distributed logistics in INDOPACOM also needs to overcome the “tyranny of distance” and “tyranny of time” that are characteristic of the vast overwater distances in the region, shifting the target range objective out to 1500 nm and beyond, further challenging conventional vertical lift platforms. Aircraft designs with electrified vertical-takeoff-and-landing (VTOL) systems face a fundamental challenge: their hover and horizontal-to/from-vertical transition flight modes demand significantly higher power outputs than cruise. As a result, vehicles using distributed-lift-plus-cruise electric propulsion must incorporate additional onboard power generation capability, adding weight and reducing the useful load of the aircraft available for payload or fuel capacity. Operational flexibility is severely impacted.MagLev Aero proposes a solution to these limitations with its tip-driven rotor fans, the TX600 and TX1200. These electrified propulsion systems offer a sizeable increase in propulsive efficiency over conventional VTOL open and ducted fan designs. By reducing tip vortex losses, optimizing duct augmentation, and enhancing thermal management, these rotors achieve efficiency gains of over 80% compared to the state of the art. This breakthrough increases payload and range upwards of 200% and 1500nm, unlocking new operational capabilities for VTOL aircraft and new capabilities for the warfighter. In the proposed effort, MagLev Aero will study the feasibility of adapting its ducted tip-drive propulsion system, the TX600, for Department of the Air Force and Department of Defense applications. The work will validate the expected advantages for critical logistics operations in the Indo-Pacific region and for applications requiring runway independence. The results of the effort are expected to demonstrate the how a TX600-equipped aircraft can improve unit performance under contested logistics conditions, prevent supply chain disruptions, and enhance operational flexibility. MagLev Aero plans to initiate a product development plan for DAF applications alongside its existing commercialization strategy. This approach will ultimately produce multiple blended wing body (BWB) UAVs and single-rotor heavy lift UAVs, targeting current DAF and DoD logistics gaps with extended payload and range capabilities.By leveraging the strengths of MagLev Aero's efficient rotors, VTOL propulsion systems and aircraft have the potential to revolutionize tactical logistics. The resulting systems will offer enhanced performance, increased payload capacity, and extended range, making them a compelling solution for a variety of military and commercial applications.
