Research abstract

The X-Suit is an innovative explosion-proof robotic solution developed to address the challenges of operating in hazardous environments containing flammable vapors, gases, and dust. This proposal aims to meet the stringent safety requirements outlined in Article 500 of the National Electrical Code (NFPA 70) by designing a protective suit for collaborative robots (cobots) that can be safely operated in such environments. The solution involves modifying existing robot arms to enhance their safety and practical applicability in energetic settings, such as the Pyrotechnics facility at Picatinny Arsenal. The proposed X-Suit solution offers a cost-effective approach for upgrading existing non-explosion-proof robotic arms to comply with rigorous safety standards without significant structural changes. The use of explosion-proof servomotors and simplified protective measures eliminates the need for additional electrical or pneumatic conduits, reducing complexity and cost. Furthermore, the X-Suit can be adapted to most existing robotic arms, enhancing their safety, reliability, and operational capacity in hazardous environments.
