Research abstract

Icarean’s Situational Intelligence Platform is a state-of-the-art solution designed to provide reliable situational awareness, precision navigation, and mission safety in GPS-denied and contested environments. Integrating Visual Positioning (TRL 7), Wire Detection (TRL 5), and Visual Traffic Detection (TRL 7), the platform combines advanced AI-based sensor fusion with certifiable machine learning to deliver real-time obstacle detection and autonomous navigation across multiple mission profiles. With exclusive IP rights for Daedalean’s military technology and a focus on certifiable AI, Icarean addresses critical operational challenges for the Department of Defense, offering a scalable, low-SWaP (Size, Weight, and Power) solution for both crewed and uncrewed platforms. The platform’s modular architecture supports deployment across various UAVs, helicopters, and tactical platforms, ensuring adaptability to diverse mission requirements. Icarean’s Visual Positioning technology operates at TRL 7, leveraging high-fidelity vision-based data and pre-surveyed terrain imagery to ensure GPS-independent navigation, even in GPS-denied environments. The system dynamically adapts to operational changes, providing precise positioning and enhanced obstacle detection. The Wire Detection system identifies hard-to-detect threats such as power lines, while the Visual Traffic Detection system enhances airspace safety by tracking nearby aircraft. As a certifiable system, Icarean is currently undergoing an SOI 2 audit with EASA and concurrent validation by the FAA, making it a key enabler for safe, autonomous operations in both military and civil aviation. Icarean’s platform is optimized for low-altitude ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance), electronic warfare, and tactical logistics support, ensuring mission success in high-threat, GPS-denied scenarios. The system’s certifiable machine learning models support autonomous decision-making, enabling precise navigation and obstacle avoidance without reliance on active sensing. The technology is a high-impact solution for mission profiles that require operational security, GPS-free navigation, and real-time traffic and terrain awareness. In Phase 1, Icarean will engage with Air Force units, AFWERX teams, and defense stakeholders to perform a detailed capability gap analysis and conduct discovery sessions. The goal is to identify operational needs where Icarean’s solution can deliver maximum impact, focusing on contested airspace operations, GPS-denied navigation, and complex mission scenarios. Phase 1 will produce a comprehensive report outlining these findings and provide a clear roadmap for Phase 2 development, which will involve targeted prototype testing and operational validation on priority platforms, including long-range ISR drones, UAVs, and tactical resupply vehicles.
