Research abstract

The  Agentic RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) platform offers the United States Air Force (USAF) a transformative solution for real-time, actionable intelligence generation and operational automation. Traditional Large Language Models (LLMs) suffer from limitations, such as “hallucination” of information and difficulty processing domain-specific data without extensive training. These issues become critical in dynamic, high-stakes environments, such as military operations, where the consequences of inaccurate data or delayed responses can impact mission success. The platform overcomes these challenges by combining advanced semantic search with autonomous action capabilities, reducing reliance on pre-trained models and enabling real-time decision-making based on novel, unstructured data. The platform seamlessly integrates with the USAF’s existing data sources, retrieving information from massive datasets, including classified intelligence, sensor data, and mission-critical reports. It generates accurate, reliable responses that reflect the specific needs of the Air Force without the need for time-consuming model fine-tuning. Key to the Agentic RAG system is its ability to act as an intelligent agent. Beyond retrieving and generating responses, it can autonomously initiate tasks, trigger operational workflows, and provide decision support in mission-critical environments. For example, it can automatically flag potential threats based on the latest intelligence, suggest logistical changes to ensure efficient resource distribution, and even propose mission re-planning based on current battlefield conditions. During Phase I of this SBIR, the project will assess the feasibility of applying the Agentic RAG platform into USAF operations, focusing on areas such as predictive maintenance, cybersecurity, and ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance). By leveraging the platform's ability to dynamically process and act on new information, the Air Force will benefit from a significant reduction in analysis time (up to 95%) and the ability to autonomously adapt to rapidly changing operational environments. This includes exploring how the platform can support the Common Operating Picture (COP) by integrating domain-specific knowledge and rapidly updating intelligence streams in real time.Through seamless integration into existing Air Force systems, the  platform provides a low-risk, high-reward pathway to dramatically increase operational efficiency and decision-making accuracy. The Phase I feasibility study will lay the foundation for a Phase II full-scale deployment across multiple Air Force domains, enhancing the USAF’s ability to respond to emerging threats and dynamic mission requirements efficiently and effectively.
