Research abstract

This proposal focuses on developing a high-efficiency, lightweight hybrid-electric ground power unit (GPU) designed to meet the U.S. Air Force's needs for Operational Imperative 5 - Resilient Basing and advanced mobility. DeltaHawkĺs compression ignition 2-stroke engine, the first clean-sheet FAA-certified engine in over 60 years, integrated with magniXĺs electric generator technology will create a power-dense, multi-fuel-capable system. The resulting hybrid-electric GPU will provide the same power output as conventional units but with half the weight and size, significantly reducing the logistical burden for rapid deployment in forward-operating bases.áThe proposed system addresses the Air Forceĺs need for adaptable power solutions that can operate on a variety of fuel types, such as Jet-A, JP8/5, and sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), aligning with the DoDĺs "one fuel forward" strategy. The hybrid-electric systemĺs simplicity, with over 40% fewer mechanical parts, enhances reliability and reduces maintenance requirements, making it suitable for austere environments. Additionally, the design supports power conversion from 400 Hz to DC and standard 50/60 Hz AC, enabling seamless integration into ground-based operations for critical equipment, communication systems, and field hospitals.áThe Phase I effort will focus on validating the technical feasibility and integration of the hybrid-electric GPU, including performance modeling, component sizing, and system model optimization. DeltaHawk will engage with Air Force stakeholders to refine technical requirements and identify operational use cases. Insights from these engagements will guide the development of a Phase II prototype, which will undergo rigorous testing to ensure performance meets military standards and user needs with an identified transition partner from Phase I.áThe dual-use potential of this technology also extends to commercial markets, where demands for efficient, portable power are increasing. The collaboration between DeltaHawk and magniX is expected to yield a versatile power solution with applications across both defense and civilian sectors, setting the stage for future advancements in hybrid-electric propulsion systems for aircraft. By leveraging proven aerospace-grade components in ground power incubator applications, this project aims to deliver a new standard in lightweight, high-performance power solutions that align with Air Force and commercial priorities.á
