Research abstract

50747-98-I Sheet-Beam Electron Guns--FARTECH, Inc., 3146 Bunche Avenue, San Diego, CA 92122-2247; (619) 455-6607 Dr. Jin-Soo Kim, Principal Investigator Dr. Jin-Soo Kim, Business Official DOE Grant No. DE-FG03-98ER82575 Amount: $75,000 Sheet electron beam microwave and millimeter-wave devices have the potential to provide higher power and better efficiency than conventional round electron beam devices. Currently, there are no commercial sources of sheet electron beam guns of the type needed for these 11 to 100 gigahertz devices. This project will design, fabricate, test, and qualify a prototype sheet-beam electron gun suitable for efficient and cost-effective high power microwave and/or millimeter-wave applications. Parametric scaling laws for applications to different regimes will be derived. The Phase I project will carry out careful analytic and numerical investigations to obtain the optimum parameters for efficient sheet-beam electron guns suitable for high power microwave and millimeter wave applications. The analysis will begin with a detailed study and initial optimization of the gun parameters in 2D geometry, then proceed to a 3D analysis, where important 3D internal beam and beam-edge effects will be addressed and a final optimization will be performed. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: Practical, production-quality sheet electron guns will enable efficient and cost effective high power microwave and millimeter-wave sources. This technology also has applications in areas such as high energy linear colliders, plasma heating, and communications._
