Research abstract

In order to address the Navy's need to acquire vertical profiles of water vapor without detection by the enemy, Quadrant Engineering proposes to design a passive millimeter wave radiometer operating at 22 GHz. Profiling is achieved by frequency scanning about the 22 GHz resonance line in order to receive thermal emission from selected altitude regions as determined by the weighting functions derived from teh radiative transfer equation. The Phase I effort will include a apaper study to determine accuracy limits on the derived values of water vapor, and to determine the altitude resolution of the measurement. This investigation will directly lead to specifications of the instrument and instrument design.
