Research abstract

As the demand for fixed spectrum assets has increased in recent years, spectrum managers have cast about for ways to alleviate a growing problem. One method is via higher spectral efficiency modulation waveforms, such as the new Tier 1 (FQPSK, SOQPSK) andTier 2 (multi-h CPM) standards. Another method is through investigation of addition spectrum allocation. A third approach addresses flexible allocation of existing spectrum among concurrent users. Unfortunately, many telemetry transmitters only havefactory-set carrier frequencies, a small set of channels, or only one of the four telemetry bands. Retrofit with a transmitter tunable to a newly desired channel can present logistical hurdles. Nova Engineering is currently under contract with the AFFTCfor the design and fabrication of Hypermod transmitters with approximately a 3X in spectral efficiency over PCM/FM, at up to 20 Mbps. The additional feature of programmable frequency agility continues the path towards an all-purpose transmitter. With oneor two modules of 2.5
