Research abstract
Not Available We propose an innovative performance accounting approach and methodology for Combat Control. While without a question combat control is a complicated undertaking across most if not all military problem domains, it is particularly hard for those with significant amounts of dynamically changing, uncertain, and at best, partially correct critical data. One problem which fits this description is commanding and operating a nuclear attack submarine, such as a Los Angeles class boat. We will research, design and provide a performance accounting methodology and a concomitant system software architecture, to assist the SSN team (CO, XO, OOD, sonar men and others) in their exceptionally hard jobs. With assistance from the submarine combat experts, we will represent and accurately model the problem of combat control under conditions of uncertain, confusing, partially correct information and significant time and mission stress. We will furthermore design and develop asynchronous, intelligent software assistants (i.e., agents) to support the reduction, management, coordination of information, and to model adversarial and friendly behavior, and to provide advice to and to agents (playing human roles). The agents will learn and cooperate, with humans and each other. The agents will facilitate efficient and effective team operation and provide both objective (e.g., faster and better problem solving) and subjective (e.g., playing Devil's Advocate and what if scenarios) suppo
