Research abstract
The objective of this project is to develop the concept of a visualization subsystem to aid in the interpretation of multi-variate seismic discrimination analysis. Novel visualization techniques will be explored to identify tools capable of aiding in the discrimination of different types of seismic events, particularly those detected at regional distances out to 2,000 km. Such techniques will include the addition of a third variable to several standard 2-dimensional discriminants to generate 3-dimensional fields which can be analyzed by both 3-D rendering and animation. Graphical representations of multi-variate statistical analysis, including principal component analysis, will also be evaluated for their discrimination capabilities. The system will be developed primarily for a Silicon Graphics machine, using X-Window and GL graphics. Several commercial visualization software products will be evaluated for possible integration into the system. A modular design for the data input and output and the visualization tools will result in a system which can be easily tailored to other multi-dimensional data problems. Anticipated Benefits: The visualization will aid in the interpretation and analysis of multi-variate seismic discrimination studies. The concept in such a system design may have implications in other commercial applications such as natural resource management, environmental studies and transportation.
