Research abstract
The problem addressed in this proposal is how to effectively design a PCS system with desirable antijam (AJ) and covertness (LPI) characteristics. The approach is to evaluate and test a PCS system bradboard using broadband CDMA direct-sequence spread spectrum subjected to jamming. Broadband CDMA provides the widest spread bandwidth which maximizes both AJ and LPI metrics. The PCS system will be based on a commercial system currently in development by InterDigital Additional techniques to improve its AJ and LPI performance, such as agile tunable filters, will also be evaluated. These filters will be derived from units developed by InterDigital as part of our B-CDMA Cellular Overlay demonstrator. The ultimate goal is to develop affordable PCS technology that can support sensitive commercial and government users, as well as the general public. Anticipated Benefits: The benefits to the government would be the ultimate availability for its use of affordable PCS wireless telephones that can be used in areas of hostilities and crises, or for highly sensitive operations where jam resistance and covertness are essential. This same PCS equipment may also prove valuable to commercial users requiring heightened security against industrial espionage and intentional or unintentional interference.
