Research abstract

75042-Higher-energy-capacity electrical storage systems are needed for growing demand in portable consumer applications. New advanced energy storage systems must (1) have higher gravimetric and volumetric energy densities than state-of-the-art batteries and (2) be readily regenerated in a manner similar to the recharging of batteries. This project will develop a compact and regenerative energy storage system for powering such consumer devices as power tools, laptop computers, and remote equipment. The technology is based upon a reversible proton-exchange-membrane fuel cell coupled with a hydrogen-fuel-supply cartridge. Regeneration occurs by operating the fuel cell in the reverse mode as an electrolyzer; alternatively, the cartridge could be replaced by another for immediate power generation. Phase I will demonstrate the operation of the energy storage system with ambient air, resulting in an energy density of 300 W-hr/kg and 2,000 W-hr/liter. A novel fuel cell/electrolyzer design and a fuel cartridge will be demonstrated. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: The energy storage system should produce power in the sub-100 Watt range and operate for 72 hours before being requiring electrical regeneration. Commercial applications are directed toward battery replacements for consumer and portable devices.
