Research abstract

Proton-conducting solid oxide fuel cells (p-SOFCs) offer significant advantages in operating temperature and fuel utilization compared to other types of fuel cells. This project will advance the materials science and manufacturing technology for ceramic proton-conducting solid oxide fuel cells (p-SOFCs). The approach will utilize commercially viable processes for powder synthesis and cell fabrication. In Phase I, the powder processing and electrolyte fabrication procedures will be validated, and the electrode will be optimized, for the p-SOFC applications. Phase I will culminate with demonstrations of large area cells. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: The p-SOFC components should find use in fuel cells, hydrogen pumps, high-purity hydrogen separators, and membrane reactors for the chemical industry. The resulting improved efficiency of hydrogen utilization should save energy and reduce pollution, thereby contributing to the development of a hydrogen-based economy ¿ one of the goals of the National Energy Policy.
