Research abstract
1 out of 5 tracheal intubations are are Difficult Tracheal Intubations (DTIs), with trauma and death rates around 80%. Over 27% of combat wounds occur to the head, neck, and airway. In the combat setting, airway compromise is the second leading cause of preventable death after hemorrhage. DTIs are hard enough for experts to perform in hospitals, but in austere environments or in the middle of a Critical Care Air Transport (CCAT) evacuation with chaos, altitude, jostling, and dim-lighting, DTIs can be nearly impossible. Over 60% of Critical Care Air Transport Team (CCATT) patients require mechanical ventilation during transport and in future conflicts there will likely be fewer doctors per patient– estimates are 1:6. The need for an expedited and successful DTI solution in austere environments is clear. Spiro Robot will enable medics with less training, Multi-Capable Airmen (MCA), in non-ideal environments to perform DTIs and save lives in the air and on the battlefield. Spiro Robotics will engage medical units with a high volume of air transport patients like CCATT and Critical Sustainment of Trauma and Readiness Skills (C-STARS).
