Research abstract

UPPER CYLINDER FRICTION AND WEAR DEFICIENCIES ARE INHIBITING THE USE OF CERAMIC CARBIDES, NITRIDES AND OXIDES IN ADIABATIC AND MULTIFUEL DIESEL ENGINES. SYNTHETIC POLYOL ESTERS OFFER THE SOLUTION TO THIS DILEMNA. A MATERIALS SYSTEM RING-LINER-BASESTOCK-ADDITIVE MATRIX APPROACH USING A HIGH TEMPERATURE OSCILLATORY FRICTION AND WEAR TESTER IS PROPOSED. THE FRICTION, WEAR AND DEPOSITION RESULTS FROM THESE MATRICES WILL BE SUPPLEMENTED BY CHEMICAL ANALYSES OF THE DEGRADED LUBRICANTS AND RING-LINER SURFACE FILMS. AN OPTIMUM RING-LINER-LUBRICANT COMBINATION IS EXPECTED TO RESULT FROM THIS RESEARCH.
