Research abstract
Computer-based data networks are entering the military tactical command and control environment. Mainstream network protocols were not designed for this environment and require considerable network management effort to use in situations as dynamic as tactical deployments. The introduction of mobile subscribers in commercial networks demands solutions to the increased dynamics of modern networks in the commercial arena as well. Preserving interoperability with installed equipment is also essential. Applied Machine Intelligence (AMINTEL) proposes to demonstrate the extension of Internet experimental and standards-track protocols to meet the needs of tactical data networks. These extensions would include provisions for fault discovery, alternate routing, preservation of consistency, and accommodation of mobile subscribers. An operational concept, protocol design, and demonstration simulation would be developed in Phase I. A Phase I option task which would provide for further refinement and formal verification in preparation for full-scale development in Phase II is also proposed.
