Research abstract

Not Available Condition-based maintenance (CBM) technology should be evaluated based on the predicted total cost of equipment maintenance, were the technology to be implemented. Decision analysis provides a framework for this prediction, which can be depicted through decision/outcome diagrams. As such, it can be used to determine which attributes of the diagnostic techniques most influence the cost and should therefore be considered as metrics for comparative evaluation of the algorithms. Measuring the identified attributes of CBM techniques can be difficult, as extensive real-world testing can be quite time consuming and prohibitively expensive. Methods like the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) can be used to quantify expert knowledge about equipment and techniques, and provide a means of obtaining good estimates regarding quantities needed to assess both CBM techniques and the equipment monitored by them. Even crude estimates often lead to cost savings through decision analysis. It is proposed to use decision analysis and AHP together in a framework to identify and measure suitable metrics for CBM technologies, and to test this framework on simulated machinery. In Phase II, the approach will be implemented and demonstrated on a variety of real-world machinery applications of interest to future aircraft carriers.
