Research abstract

This SBIR project proposes to develop a real-time control environment for smart weapon systems using the Domain-Specific Software Architecture (DSSA) approach. The innovation of this approach is to first define the architecture and then design and implement the real-time control software. In addition to a software environment for real-time control, this effort will create reusable algorithm components, device drivers, timer service and interface components conforming to the DSSA program. The architecture will be defined, described and evaluated through the use of the formal architecture description language (ADL) Rapide which allows easy model building and prototyping of large-scale systems with constructs that facilitate the description of concurrency and timing. Windows displays, mouse cursor selection, graphical modeling and on-line parameter tuning are incorporated elements that lead to a user-friendly interface. A prototype demonstration at AGNC will implement a real-time interface with the functions of code generation, cross compilation and assembly, downloading, tracing and debugging. The Phase II efforts will apply the DSSA approach to the battlefield management area of distributed expert system decision aids for the small unit commander. A software architect will be defined to fuse sensor data, geographic data, meteorological data and intelligence data into a succinct and thoroughly informative inference structure so as to provide the commander complete situation awareness and support in decision making.
