Research abstract

65289 Catalytic membrane reactors offer enhanced productivity and improved energy efficiency for several key reactive separation processes in the chemical and refinery industries. Although the concept has been verified experimentally, existing membranes have failed to be commercially implemented, primarily due to their lack of material stability in the application environment. This project will utilize an innovative hydrogen selective silicon carbide (SiC) membrane to demonstrate a commercially viable catalytic membrane reactor process. This membrane has demonstrated excellent material stability, required for methane steam reforming and dehydrogenation via a catalytic membrane reactor. Phase I will conduct a bench-top experimental study using this selected membrane to demonstrate the benefits of reactive separations for an industrially significant reaction, hydrogen production via methane steam reforming. In addition, the hydrothermal and chemical stability of the SiC membrane under reaction conditions will be experimentally verified. Commercial Applications And Other Benefits as described by awardee: In addition to methane steam reforming, the hydrogen selective SiC membrane reactor should have applicability to other reactive separation processes, including various dehydrogenations and H2S decomposition.
