Research abstract
Hydrogen powered equipment requires a source of hydrogen, a fuel that is not widely distributed. Currently the military runs nearly exclusively on JP-8, a heavy hydrocarbon. To make hydrogen powered equipment practical at forward locations requires areformer that can produce hydrogen from JP-8. The plasmatron reformer at the core of this process can process any fluid hydrocarbon, including fuels with sulfur contents that would destroy most other reformers, and convert it to a hydrogen-rich gasstream, reaching concentrations over 80 vol.%. This SBIR Phase II project will prove the feasibility of manufacturing a compact JP-8 or diesel fuel reformer to continuously produce high-quality hydrogen gas of 15 scfm at 6,250 psi. This will bedemonstrated by the fabrication and delivery to the Air Force of a prototype unit.
