Research abstract

DESCRIPTION (adapted from the Abstract): Each year, large numbers of children prenatally exposed to alcohol are placed for adoption. However, little information is available for such adoptive parents. The goal of this project is to develop an Electronic Performance Support system (EPSS) that will enhance adoptive parents' ability to address the problems associated with the Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS). Six technical questions will be addressed in Phase I: (a) What is the most current clinically reliable and useful information available on the long-term outcome of alcohol-exposed children and the impact thereof? (b) What are the most important components of comprehensive health care and early developmental assessment and intervention for alcohol-exposed children? (c) What influences prospective parents' decisions to adopt alcohol- exposed children? (d) What are the most important questions and barriers prospective families have about adopting alcohol-exposed children? (e) What elements contribute to the problems associated with FAS and alcohol- related birth defects (ARBD)? (f) What are the elements of an EPSS that enhance accessibility to information? Through answering these six questions, a detailed protocol for the production, testing, and evaluation of an EPSS that enhances adoptive parents' ability to deal with the problems associated with FAS will be developed. $ = TOTAL AWARD AMTS & NOT LIMITED TO PORTION OF PROJECT RELATED TO SUBJECT OF SEARCH SUBPROJECT $ = TOTAL AWARD AMOUNT DIVIDED BY NUMBER OF SUBPROJECTS SOURCE: CRISP FORMAT F FY 97 LAST UPDATE 04-07-98 1QUERY 1536 ID SEARCH 06/01/98 PAGE 383 --PROJECT NUMBER......1 R43 HD35799-01 INVESTIGATOR NAME/ADDRESS FY 97 HO, VINCENT IRG/INTRAMURAL UNIT..ZRG5 CYKE, INCORPORATED AWARD AMOUNT......... $99,846 4735 ROSWELL ROAD, #1245 ATLANTA, GA 30342 PERFORMING ORGANIZATION: CLINICAL TOOLS, INC. TITLE E. MOTION EXPRESS: CDROM GUIDE FOR EMOTIONAL REGULATION ABSTRACT: DESCRIPTION (adapted from the Abstract): The proposed research will create and test "Adventures with the E. Motion Express," an interactive multimedia CD-ROM that helps pre-adolescent children understand emotional regulation and increase their repertoire of coping skills. In children with severe emotional regulation problems, approximately 4 million suffer from depressive symptoms and half a million have a full-blown diagnosis of major depression. The prevalence of depression doubles during the teen years and suicide is the third leading cause of death (more than all forms of cancer) for adolescents. In Phase I, the researchers will develop the E. Motion Express prototype which will present information about depression and different emotional regulation strategies. Computer animation of the E. Motion Express and 3-D images of the brain will provide explanations of different emotional regulation strategies and the effects of depression in the brain. Interactive animated segments will provide scenarios for children to practice different emotional regulation strategies. In Phase II, the researchers will prepare the complete E. Motion Express CD-ROM which will apply the same regulation strategies to other emotional states often problematic for children: anger and anxiety. Three- dimensional images of the brain will be modified to provide education also on substance abuse and its effects on emotions and the brain. $ = TOTAL AWARD AMTS & NOT LIMITED TO PORTION OF PROJECT RELATED TO SUBJECT OF SEARCH SUBPROJECT $ = TOTAL AWARD AMOUNT DIVIDED BY NUMBER OF SUBPROJECTS SOURCE: CRISP FORMAT F FY 97 LAST UPDATE 04-07-98 1QUERY 1536 ID SEARCH 06/01/98 PAGE 384 --PROJECT NUMBER......1 R43 HD36085-01 INVESTIGATOR NAME/ADDRESS FY 97 LUTHER, JEAN M IRG/INTRAMURAL UNIT..ZRG2 STAC INC AWARD AMOUNT......... $91,804 11250 WAPLES MILL #300 FAIRFAX, VA 22030 PERFORMING ORGANIZATION: SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNICAL ANALYSIS CORP TITLE INFANT AND CHILD NUTRITION ANALYSIS TOOL ABSTRACT: The overall objective is to develop and deliver an automated decision support tool to assess the nutritional status of infants and toddlers aged 0-3 years. The program will review both enteral and I.V. delivery of nutrients, and will be applicable to both inpatient and outpatient settings. Phase I has the specific objective of providing a working prototype system with source code and user's manual. The program will contain an elaborate array of decision trees produced from current AAPCON and ASPEN recommendations. The program will evaluate a patient's intake and produce current nutritional intake values. The intake values will be evaluated against current standards, and recommendations will be made to correct any variations. Growth curves will be generated for all patients. Curve selection will be based on corrected age when appropriate, and will take geographical data into consideration. Curves and nutrition reports will be printable for chart documentation, and the Gomez scores will be available for helping to determine intake adequacy.
