Research abstract
Biodiesel, a clean burning alternative fuel produced from domestic renewable resources, is a mixture of fatty acid alkyl esters made from vegetable oils, animal fats, or recycled greases. Unfortunately, the water generated during biodiesel production is difficult to remove, greatly increasing production cost. Further, biodiesel is relatively hygroscopic, meaning that it can adsorb water during transportation and storage. Because water can be harmful to diesel engine operation, it must be removed (to the level of the ASTM D6751 standard). However, conventional methods of biodiesel dehydration are so expensive that they can limit the adoption of biodiesel as a replacement for fossil fuel. This project will develop a low-cost membrane-based process for the dehydration of biodiesel. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: The membrane technology should reduce the cost of biodiesel production and promote the use of biodiesel. Increased utilization of biodiesel fuel will reduce US dependence on foreign oil, enhance US national security, and reduce atmospheric emissions.
