Research abstract

High power RF sources are required for driving accelerators and colliders at high power at 200 MHz. However, no high power RF sources are currently available at this power level and frequency. A single-beam klystron would be larger than can be practically built and used. Therefore, this project will develop a high-power multiple-beam klystron. The multiple beam approach reduces the operating voltage and the length, while increasing efficiency and bandwidth. The reduced size would allow fabrication and installation into existing facilities. The reduced voltage also would enable potential applications where an oil tank is not necessary for the high voltage ceramic. These features would further reduces costs and addresses environmental concerns. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: A number of accelerator applications under consideration require high power RF sources at frequencies around 200 MHz, including the Tevatron at Fermilab and muon colliders. Successful development of the RF source would allow these accelerator systems to be built, providing a significant commercial opportunity for the multiple-beam klystron proposed in this project
