Research abstract
A pulsed microwave power, pulsed pressure method that is capable of uniformly and rapidly densifying thick CMC parts to density levels of 95% or greater is proposed. A systematic approach for independently varying the microwave power and reactant pressure cycles in order to define the optimum process protocols for a specific ceramic matrix and part geometry (thickness) is given. A innovative approach for producing dense adherent, protective oxides for these C/HfC-Tac ceramic matrix composite (CMC) rocket thrusters capable of handling a broad spectrum of higher performance propellant-oxidant reactants is included.
