Research abstract
Not Available Foster-Miller proposes to develop a flexible primer system for US Naval aircraft which meets/exceeds current military specifications (TT-P-2760) and exhibits enhanced delamination resistance and corrosion protection without the use of toxic chromates. Our approach combines three concepts to generate this next-generation primer: 1) incorporation of flexible segments into the primer which do not impact mechanical and solvent resistance properties, 2) incorporation of functional groups into the primer enabling chemical bonds to be formed across every interface, and 3) a non-chrome-containing corrosion inhibitor system that becomes active only at the onset of corrosion. The primer will be designed not to require any special equipment or procedures which would interfere with naval aircraft maintenance facility operations. Phase I will concentrate on proof of primer feasibility and preliminary corrosion studies, with full development of the corrosion inhibitor system deferred until Phase II. Primer formulations will be developed, tested and evaluated according to targeted performance specifications of TT-P-2760. The primer will be low VOC, have viscosities suitable for spray application, and be compatible with existing substrate pretreatments and topcoats. Samples of coated test panels will be submitted to the US Navy for independent evaluation.
