Research abstract
The SafeFlight UAS Response and Reporting System addresses the gaps in the response to low altitude airspace threats, such as UAS incursions, laser illuminations, aircraft in distress, or other ground-based interruptions, and the successful engagement and resolution by civilian law enforcement or security forces. Developed and validated at the US Air Force Accelerator, the system addresses joint threats to CONUS and OCONUS military bases and surrounding civilian jurisdictions. The system is dual-use cloud-based, progressive web apps, with interactive mapping, including the AFRL “TAK.” The INPUT TIER provides the military or civilian air traffic controller to record reports of UAS encounters, laser illuminations, bird strikes, and other emergencies, and from C-UAS systems for BDOC’s and/or PSAP’s. The TRIAGE TIER assesses the location of the incident and uses AI to validate and prioritize the response. AI/ML technology factors elements such as the FAA Facility Map values, landing and departure routes, commercial flight deconfliction, and other for the degree of response and referral to Fusion Centers and other analysis sources. The RESPONSE TIER is the field response management, investigation, forensic evidence, and incident reporting tool for first responders. Using a map-centric design, the first responder is guided through a series of “smart questions” that analyze the responses and suggest appropriate military, federal; state, and local statute violations.
