Research abstract

Modern Army vehicles require durable, modular, lightweight structures with high survivability armor integration. Application of smart structure concepts combined with advanced composite materials offer the potential for a new series of structural systemsto meet these requirements.During Phase I of the project the accurate modeling of advanced composites at multi-scale levels was demonstrated. It is the objective of this phase to combine smart structure concepts with Phase I results to develop a software for Army engineers to use intheir design of next generation Army smart structure vehicles. The specific technical objectives of the Phase II are:¿ Implementation of a global-local engineering methodology using asymptotic homogenization theory to obtain a model with varying degrees of fidelity that describe the dynamic response of smart composite Army vehicles.¿ Implementation of robust algorithms for estimation and identification of active systems on the basis of finite element formulation of intelligent systems.¿ Implementation of order reduction algorithms and generation of accurate finite element based state space model.¿ Extension of proven smart structure concepts to control algorithm design for vibration damping of benchmark and full size problems using finite element based state space model.¿ Extension of proven smart structure concepts to control algorithm design for damage detection using finite element based state space model.¿ Formulation and implementation of robust algorithms for optimal sensor and actuator placements.
