Research abstract

Explosive devices used during the last 20 years of combat have caused a rise in Craniomaxillofacial Trauma (CMFT); Around 30-40% of all combat casualties now occur to the head, neck, and airway. CMFT can affect the face, neck, and scalp, and includes facial bone fractures, dentoalveolar trauma, and soft tissue injuries. Additionally, newer munitions create smaller fragments of debris that embed themselves in soft tissue and bone, causing far more complex injury that leaves personnel debilitated and/or costs up to $50k per surgery to treat. As medical technology advances and survival rates increase, personnel return from combat with debilitating injury resulting in discharge. DAF needs a solution to treat these valuable personnel to prevent discharge and debilitation. MatriNova will revolutionize soft tissue repair with a nanofiber membrane that mimics the extracellular matrix to promote cell regrowth while resorbing slowly and maintaining strength without much inflammation. Matregenix will engage large medical units with a high volume of craniomaxillofacial surgery cases such as 59th Medical Wing.
