Research abstract
THE PROBLEMThe military’s testing headforms & headgear design omit the anatomy of the temporal mandibular joint (TMJ) & its relationship to the brain; providing no medically information relative to TMJ disorders (TMJD) nor the deleterious impact forces delivered to the various components of this joint structure supporting the brain’s temporal lobe. A medical knowledge-gap in the anatomy & treatment of traumatic brain injuries (TBIs)/concussions.The TMJ structures includes the glenoid fossa bone supporting the brain’s temporal lobe, the petrous pyramids (governs vision & hearing) & several cranial nerves & vessels; all of which are primary recipients of bilateral impacts forces of the lower jaw’s condyles from head impact forces that cause the symptoms of concussions, TBIs (& mild TBIs), physiological episodes (PEs), & TMJDs (also known as TMDs).Air Force’s well-designed & essential training missions, are highly damaging to the unprotected temporomandibular joint (TMJ). The training places significant stress on the TMJ & brain producing TMJDs which can affect aviators throughout their lives. Many TMJD’s are produced during training: blast, breach, & heavy artillery ops, aviator g-force maneuvers, cheek-riser-stabilized arms firing, airborne ops, & others; creating a substantial need for treatment & protection of warfighters.Upon discovering fracture patterns in the TMJ (often splintering & piercing the brain of patients diagnosed with TBI/mTBIs) via CBCT scanning, Dr Williams, has developed the following: New novel diagnostic scanning methodology for the fractures of TBIs/concussion in the TMJBaseline Return-to-duty testing apparatusPatented intra-oral TBI/concussion prevention device (J-RES)Timely cost-effective non-invasive treatment methodologyThe TMJ & its relationship to the brain must be considered as a component of brain health & safety for military personnel. The current subjective diagnosis of TBI/mTBI has yielded no significant progress to better the quality-of-life of victims affected nor to protect the warfighters exposed to trauma that commonly produce these injuries & symptoms. THE SOLUTIONThe efficacy of the research proposed can be validated by our request of 5 aviation personnel for the diagnosis, treatment, and fitting of J-RES.J-RES: An intraoral devise absorbs the condyle’s trauma from the TMJ & base of brain by disengaging & locking it out of the skull’s glenoid fossa; preventing the brain from impacts causing TBI/mTBIs. J-RES also produces an immediate calculatable increase in strength of 20-30%. JJSI has developed the science of the common lower jaw impact fractures of concussions, successfully diagnosing & treating TBI symptoms in military, athletic, and civilian populations. This injury of training must be addressed. By protecting the TMJ, we can improve aviators' strength, performance, morale, and overall well-being, while also increasing the number of capable aviators saving millions.
