Research abstract

This proposal describes the development of fast video and audio compression and playback routines for full screen, full motion color video and audio suitable for use on the AN/PSM-80(V) Army Contact Test Set-III (CTS-III). The innovation of this approach is based on the integration of video color domain conversion with a modified pyramid transform (GMAI Algorithm) using vector quantization, adaptive techniques, and motion compensation used in combination with existing audio compression technology. Technical objectives associated with this approach include the survey of existing standards and techniques for video and audio compression; adaptation, development and test of the proposed compression algorithms in the CTS-III domain, and development of detailed designs for Phase II implementation.
