Research abstract

Recent world events have underscored the changing political and military requirements of the United States and its Allies to respond to situations not previously envisioned as primary missions of their Navies. Military missions which require the extensive use of mines, anti-ship cruise missiles (HARPOON), land attack cruise missiles (TOMAHAWK) and torpedoes in conjunction with littoral operations tax existing assets of the United States and its Allies beyond their present hardware suite design capabilities. The most cost-effective method to address this issue is to embrace a concept of a "Rapid Prototype" portable Submarine Combat Control and Launch System. The "Rapid Prototype" system should be capable of use with a variety of Submarine launched weapons and delivery vehicles, from all types of Submarine platforms. Implementation of this concept can provide a low-cost alternative to the present method of Combat System development and deployment, where long lead times and large outlay costs restrict the ability of the United States and its Allies to rapidly respond to evolving world events in a timely manner. Developed technology could be used for underwater bridge, oil platform, sewer system, or ship hull inspections where the use of SCUBA divers would be unsafe or unsuitable.
