Research abstract

The Air Force requires versatile, low-skill-barrier repair tools for heavy equipment in forward environments, where critical breakdowns halt time-sensitive operations. Welding is an efficient method for restoring functionality, yet arc-based welding demands extensive training and knowledge of metallurgy. aRoboticsCompany proposes to address this by developing an expeditionary laser welding system - the Lase-R- in a rugged offroad trailer for expeditionary use. Laser welding requires minimal training but traditionally involves complex equipment. By miniaturizing the system with high-energy density power-handling architecture, any Airman can execute effective welds on challenging shapes and alloys without weeks of training. The proposed Lase-R system will feature a 2kW laser welder, all necessary support equipment, and only requires fuel or electricity as consumables. The system generates shielding gas by purifying nitrogen from the atmosphere, allowing moderate-strength welds even in the absence of argon, which is occasionally needed for full-strength results. Laser welding demands less dexterity and fine motor skill compared to arc welding, and it is more forgiving of metallurgical conditions that can compromise arc welds. With as little as 20 minutes of practice, novices can produce reliable field expedient welds, enabling rapid equipment repairs and extending operational runtime in remote settings.
