Research abstract

The design of complex three-dimensional (3D) charged particle devices, used in high energy physics research, is extremely difficult. It has been recognized that computer optimization can provide a critical tool for designing the next generation of advanced, higher performance devices. Therefore, this project will implement computer-optimized design technology in advanced 3D simulation tools for the modeling of charged particles in electromagnetic fields. In Phase I, techniques will be developed for parameterizing geometric entities in complex 3D structures, along with such operational parameters as voltages, currents, dielectric constants, material properties, and conductivities. Optimization algorithms, appropriate for charged particle device design, will be identified and tested. Finally, a roadmap will be generated for implementing this technology into the latest generation of computational design tools. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the Applicant: The software routines should find use in laboratories and industrial organizations that develop advanced radio frequency (RF) devices, including RF sources, accelerators, spectrometers, X-Ray sources, and electron beam lithographic equipment. Opportunities exist both for the marketing of these routines and for the provision of integration services to other software developers.
