Research abstract
Not Available Recent advances in acoustic modeling and inversion has led to the development of new acoustic tomography approaches for rapid environmental assessment. However, most tomography work has focused on deep-water environments where the bottom interaction is insignificant. In shallow water, the bottom is the most significant environmental factor affecting sonar performance. The variability of the seabed properties far exceeds those experienced in water column, making the shallow water environmental assessment much more complex. Here, we propose to develop a new model-based approach based on identification of distinct time-angle properties of seabed reverberation which are hypothesized to uniquely characterize the seabed sound speed structure and the reverberation mechanism such as volume and surface scattering. Image processing techniques such as edge detection and template matching are used to detect the seabed characterizing features of the time-angle signal power. The algorithm is expected to be robust because the model matching is done in the signal power as opposed to phase sensitive algorithms such as Matched Field Processing.
