An inexpensive compact electron source is needed for advanced accelerator R&D experiments. This project will develop a novel linear accelerator injected racetrack microtron using permanent magnets, incorporate the electron gun in the 1st accelerating cell, and use the microtron stability conditions to produce very short, high current pulses. The project will produce 12 beams with energies from 5 to 35 MeV selectable in 2.5 MeV steps each having >109 electrons in 5¿s trains produced at repetition rates selectable from 1 to 100 Hz. All beams will have small, normalized 5p mm-mrad transverse and 50 keV¿degree longitudinal emittances. Beam bunches as short as ~1 ps with peak current of >100 A can also be delivered without degrading other beam parameters. Production models of this source should cost ~$600,000. Seven tasks will be accomplished: the radio frequency gun cavity for resonant and 4th sub-harmonic frequency operation will be optimized; the gun and injector accelerating structure beam dynamics calculated; the beam optics optimized; the bending magnets optimized; the input and output beam lines calculated; the power supply system design completed; and the construction, installation, site, shielding, and alarm requirements determined.
Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: Commercial potential for the proposed electron source includes: (1) university/industrial advanced accelerator laboratories, (2) free electron laser drivers, and (3) medical oncology treatment facilities._
