Research abstract

"The proposed program will prototype an approach to monitoring Military Health System Data Repository (MDR) and other data, thereby enabling the early detection of potential BW/BT attacks. The proposed project will develop and integrate diverse biologicalmodeling and data mining information systems technologies through the development of an Automated Anomaly Detection Processor. The envisioned network will gather and integrate data from clinical, laboratory, and non-clinical information sources (e.g.absentee reports, veterinary reports, pharmacy activity, facility characteristics, and environmental data) from the entire DoD MDR. The system will support real-time epidemiological analysis on the data arrays and provide autonomous alerts of anomalous orunusual health events in the DoD military or civilian population that are potentially indicative of a biological event. The system will provide an instant aggregation and analysis capability of anomalous events on any military population served, therebyfacilitating early warning and decision making about biological attacks. Moreover, it will utilize "drill down" data mining techniques to interrogate an individual's health information, allowing providers to review detailed medical histories, masterproblem analysis, drug reactions, and health care trends in a matter of seconds-as opposed to minutes-to-hours if assessed from the current system of paper and electronic records.
