Research abstract

With the recent progress in the development of millimeter wave (MMW) receivers, especially those based on low-cost microwave/MMW integrated circuits, MMW imaging sensors have become a reality. Once fully developed, they will offer a major advantage over infrared and visible range imagers in that they can much better "see" objects under adverse atmospheric conditions. A critical issue that remains to be solved on the path to a low-cost passive MMW imaging sensor is an inexpensive, high-resolution scanning antenna. The WaveBand concept uses an array of non-uniform evanescent wave grating couplers to form a two-dimensional scanning antenna that can work at very high frame rates. The proposed research will demonstrate a proof-of-concept antenna model, and will produce a design for a 2-D scanning antenna prototype. Phase II will result in fabrication of a prototype low-cost MMW radiometric imaging system. The proposed antenna is characterized by:-Simplified control and synchronization-2-D scanning capability-Design to fit wide variey of airframes-Light weight-Improved reliability compared to gimbal installations-Low-cost-High frame rate imaging-Continuous constant-speed rotation-High resolution linear scan
