Research abstract
"Current x-ray imaging systems used in ballistic range measurements are single pulsed, one image per film plane systems. There is need for an ultra-high-framing x-ray system to capture multiple images at high frame rate from one location. The requirement isto produce multiple x-ray images on a single large (~36 inch) format scintillator screen that can be captured and stored electronically at a frame rate of up to 1 MHz. The refresh time of the screen should not exceed 1 microsecond and the storage mediumshould accommodate at least 100 frames. The x-ray imaging system should have adequate spatial resolution to image small, 1/8 inch, aluminum particles and the multi-pulse x-ray gun should have an x-ray energy level of 150 keV or greater. The imaging screenwill be located in a shrapnel prone impact area and should be disposable (low cost) or have an alternate method of preventing damage to high cost components. In Phase I the critical aspects of the system will be demonstrated. Phase I will also include theconceptual design of a ultra-high-framing rate x-ray system meeting the above requirements. The anticipated benefit of this program is a major state-of-the-art advancement in high frame rate X-ray systems for military and industrial non-destructive testingapplications. The initial commercial application is the ballistic range testing at AEDC. There are ballistic range and explosive testing facilities within DOD and DOE where this in
