Research abstract
Sigma Technology Inc. (STI) is proposing to develop a Microwave Applicator and Tape Curing System (MATACS) for repair and high speed manufacture of carbon fiber reinforced composite parts and structures. The proposed technology development program would be based the basic innovations Microwave Curing Systems; 2.) Properietory Polymer Matrices Optimized for Microwave Processing; 3.) Advanced Pre-Pregging Methods for Improved Homogeneity; 4.) Optimal Lay-Up of Pre-Pregged Carbon Fiber Tapes. The main goal of the proposed Phase I efforts would be to demonstrate the adaptability of Applicator and High Speed Microwave Processing System for selected materials with optimization of design and process parameters. During the project period of ten months, complete basic engineering work of an Improved Applicator; 2.) Material Selection for Composite Tape Lay-up; 3.) Selection of Optimal Microwave Power Source; 4.) Selection of Process Parameters through Modelling and Simulation. These four major steps would successfully complete the objectives of Phase I and allow STI to enter Phase II fully prepared for the fabrication and production prove-out of the MATACS system.
