Research abstract

ADVANCED DEVELOPMENT OF A REGENERATIVE ENERGY-EFFICIENT FLUE GAS DESULFURIZATION (FGD) PROCESS, BASED ON OXIDATION OF SO2 WITH BR2 AND ELECTROLYTIC REGENERATION OF THE REAGENTBR2, IS PROPOSED. AN AIR-DEPOLARIZED CATHODE FOR THE ELECTROLYSIS CELL WILL BE DEVELOPED TO DECREASE THE ENERGY REQUIREMENTS OF THIS PROCESS BY 40-50%. ADVANCED DEVELOPMENT OF THE PROTON EXCHANGE MEMBRANE ELECTROLYSIS CELL TO MINIMIZE POISONING OF THE CATHODE BY BROMINE SPECIESAND TO ENHANCE CELL EFFICIENCY IS ALSO PROPOSED. THE PROPOSED FGD PROCESS SHOULD MEET THE DOE GOAL OF USING LESS THAN 1% OF THE ENERGY INPUT TO THE COAL COMBUSTOR, AND WILL BE TOTALLY REGENERABLE, ELIMINATING THE SLUDGE AND WASTEWATER DISPOSAL PROBLEMS OF CONVENTIONAL FGD PROCESSES.
