Research abstract
Not Available Foster-Miller proposes to develop a high-speed phase only spatial light modulator (P-SLM) based on micro0electro0mechanical (MEMS) technology. When fully implemented, the P-SLM will have 360 deg gray phase scale, 20 ¿m pixel size with 256 x 256 pixel count, frame rate of higher than 1 kHz, and a fill factor of 90 percent. Phase only SLM are the most versatile among the various SLM designs. A P-SLM with high resolution, high frame rate, and large dynamic range would permit the real-time synthesis of large number of optical elements such as spatial filters, dynamic interconnect elements, and optical coordinate transformers. One of the most important characteristics of the proposed device, which distinguishes it from other design, is its ability for integration with a Si IC driver together with a fill factor of over 90 percent. This approach to P-SLM can be produced using well established MEMS fabrication technology.
