Research abstract

CPS Technologies Corp. (CPS) will develop a novel ultra low sintered electromagnetic (EM) shielding material that is lightweight, strong, and conformable to artillery shell geometries. CPS will investigate the use of ultra low temperature sintered ceramics for EM shielding under elevated temperatures. Novel ceramic compositions will be sintered under 650°C, and be capable of withstanding operational temperatures up to 650°C. Ceramics will be designed to be sintered to alloys such as aluminum, titanium, and iron for proper shielding adherence onto artillery shells. Manufacturing of ultra low temperature sintered composites will be optimized via CPS' proprietary Quickset injection molding techniques, which will allow for intricate double curved surfaces of 1/16-1/8 inch thick to be directly manufactured, unlike tape casting or isostatic pressing of ceramics. CPS will investigate three different compositions for ultra low temperature sintered ceramics. Each composition will be tested for electromagnetic shielding at ambient and elevated temperatures, as well as ensuring mechanical stability at elevated temperatures up to 650°C. The top preforming ceramic composition will be injection molded and sintered into a 6x6 inch double curved surface prototype to exemplified the geometric capabilities of quickset injection molding.
