Research abstract

Xtrana, Incorporated over the past five years has been developing a strategy for the capture of nucleic acid of microbial pathogens onto a proprietary Xtra Bind matrix, amplifying specific target sequences using isothermal amplification chemistries, followed by immediate visual detection by lateral flow chromatography. We propose to adapt this strategy to develop a quantitative assay for the detection of Campylobacter. The ultimate assay will be incorporated into a hand held device with an integrated platform that will accommodate high throughput, yet with simple methods that do not require a sophisticated laboratory or highly trained personnel. Campylobacter currently contaminates from 60- 90% of poultry an quantitative monitoring in conjunction with Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) plans is being considered by the FSIS. Our assay would enable more rapid and specific quantitative detection of Campylobacter. This would result in more effective monitoring of HACCP providing for immediate and more rational corrective action.
