Research abstract

Our research will develop a dynamic in vitro model of the neonatal brain for calibration, refinement, and testing of near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) instruments. The model will be a solidconstruct containing a microvascular network that will be perfused with human blood. Hemoglobinoxygen saturation (SO2) will be measured by co-oximetry, permitting direct comparison of theNIRS-calculated SO2 with a gold standard measure. The technical objectives include: construct themodel, characterize the optical properties of the model, and compare these with those of the neonatalpiglet brain.
