Research abstract

50051-98-I The Development of "ShortWatch," a Novel Overtemperature and Mechanical Damage Sensing Technology for Wires or Cables--BPW Incorporated, 372 River Drive, Dahlonega, GA 30533-5248; (757) 850-8679 Mr. Kenneth S. Watkins, Principal Investigator Mr. Jack Morris, Business Official DOE Grant No. DE-FG02-98ER82543 Amount: $74,500 This project will develop the ¿ShortWatch¿ fault-sensing technology which will sense overtemperature or mechanical damage to electrical wire before a short-circuit or electrical fire can occur. The development requires the selection and testing of a conducting polymer sensor strip(s) installed along the insulation of the protected wire. The interruption or damage of this sensor strip will be monitored and will initiate an alarm or trip function. Tasks planned for the project includes selection and testing of the proper conducting polymer material and a compatible insulation material, and the design of an electrical wire or cable which incorporates this ¿ShortWatch¿ technology. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: The commercial application for ¿ShortWatch¿ technology includes any application, residential or industrial, that uses electrical wire or cable._
