Research abstract

The primary objective of this Phase I research effort is to provide the U.S. Army with improved flame resistance for currently fielded textiles. Flame resistance continues to one of the most difficult attributes to achieve with new textile materials. Many varieties of textile fabric which have been previously excluded due to their lack of flame resistance could be potentially utilized for military applications by incorporating microencapsulated flame retardant particles. This novel application of microencapsulation technology should produce benefits by increasing safety, reliability and reduce costs associated with repeated applications of flame retardant chemicals.
