Research abstract
Not Available Recent figures indicate that 30 of every 1000 school-age children have a hearing loss. This invisible condition affects us and everyone around us. TeleSonic proposes to address these and other related issues faced by the "invisible population "in classroom settings by developing practical real-time speech-to-text solutions for educators. The hypothesis of this research and development effort is "It is feasible to develop a practical real-time speech-to-text system for use in classroom settings by teachers, their students with hearing loss and/or speech impairments, and all other students, to provide a "full participation" communications system. The Phase I workplan includes: 1) identifying the necessary system components; 2) identifying related classroom issues; 3) acquiring and testing the individual components; 4) assembling and integrating the components; 5) customizing the software language and macro; 6) seeking focus group input, and 7) analyzing and reporting results. Anticipated benefits include new technical approaches and tools for teachers in supporting the mandates of inclusive education. The program should enable students with a hearing loss to achieve the outcomes expected of all students, such as a better understanding of the information presented, greater independence, productivity, and quality of life that promotes equity and learning opportunities.
