Research abstract
MTL and Dr. Dinesh Bhatia of the University of Cincinnati propose to develop a Dynamically-Reprogrammable Avionics System Technology Implementation Concept (DRASTIC). DRASTIC will be an FPGA-based methodology for dynamically reprogramming modules for changing algorithms, to achieve low-cost, modular, reliable avionics (and other) systems. The effort will utilize innovative CAD techniques and tools, currently being developed at UC, for macro-based partitioning and mapping of FPGAs under dynamic conditions. The Phase I objectives will be to implement an experimental environment using the existing UC assets, apply a realistic test case to the environment to assess performance and feasibility, and use the experimental results as a basis for developing a top-level design. Interactions with the user and FPGA tool vendor communities in Phase I will also form the basis for subsequent commercialization activities. The products of the Phase I effort will be experimentally-qualified DRASTIC concepts, the top-level design, and a preliminary commercialization plan. These products will form a substantial basis for subsequent Phase II prototype development and commercialization activities.
