Research abstract

Submerged archaeological sites contain a significant part of our historical legacy-one that is increasingly threatened by development, vandalism and natural forces. In recognition of that legacy, the New England Shipwreck Survey Initiative (NESSI) has been planned in order to identify and preserve the maritime archaeological resources of the region. A computerized database, specifically a Geographic Information System (GIS), will be used for the inventory and evaluation of shipwrecks, wharves, shipyards, piers, and other marine-related cultural resources. The database will be designed to map, organize, and regulate the provenience of maritime archaeological sites, and conduct complex spatial analysis such as predictive modeling. The NESSI GIS will serve as the foundation and model for the management of maritime cultural resources throughout the United States
