Research abstract

70789 There are no low cost solutions to the problem of neutron radiation in nuclear power plants. Current protective materials and techniques for making them are very expensive. Recent research investigating Ni/boron carbide material, fabricated via high velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) plasma spray, has shown significant positive results in protection from neutron radiation. This project will further develop this material and associated application techniques to significantly reduce the cost of radiation protection and storage. Phase I will fabricate and characterize the neutron absorption materials. Ultimately, a U.S. source for Ni Carbonyl will be created. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: Nickel/boron carbide powders should have application in composite materials, thermal spray coating, and wear resistance. In addition, the nickel coating should have application to electronics and filler materials.
